One of those unexpected moments

Did you ever have one of those moments when something happens so quickly that you have no idea what settings you have on your camera – you just point and shoot?IMG_6789Well, this morning, I was chatting with some folks about a Wood Stork in the pond, when all of a sudden I spotted this Great Egret, who had just caught a fish that very second.IMG_6790I had no idea what my camera was set on, but I couldn’t ‘let this one get away’.  Too bad I must have moved when he tossed it into the air!! Even though I would have liked the shots to have been much sharper, it was so fun to witness that I kept them all.IMG_6791I’d say no more than 2-3 seconds passed from the time I saw him till he swallowed that fish! All the photos in the sequence say 9:18 am 😉

  1. Wow! Great captures! Such a sudden discovery happens to me quite often with birds. Sometimes the settings are about right and other times…not so. But we have to “shoot from the hip” when called for 🙂

  7. Great capture BJ, it reminds me of a similar experience I blogged some months ago, where the cormorant through the fish up in the air to make it fall head first into its mouth, I only just caught it as I was talking to another birder.

  8. Great sequence of shots. Sometimes I can anticipate action, but more often than not, I am reacting to something as it is happening. I try to be conscious of my camera settings, so they will be approximately right if I have to react quickly. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. This worked wonderfully for you–the shot with the fish in mid-air is priceless.
