Pensive Blue Jay

IMG_6500Blue Jays are so common throughout the eastern and central United States and southern Canada that I tend to forget that not everyone is familiar with them. The Audubon site is a rich source of information about the history, behavior, and many varied calls of this showy and raucous bird.

Blue Jays are known to be bold, boisterous – and quite noisy. I saw this one the other day in the cypress forest and he looked so quiet and thoughtful that I just had to share his photo.

Here’s an interesting tidbit I just learned from another great source, All About Birds, about the Blue Jay‘s brilliant coloring:  “The pigment in Blue Jay feathers is melanin, which is brown. The blue color is caused by scattering light through modified cells on the surface of the feather barbs.”
