Yes, these are my real colors!

IMG_1991There is nothing quite so striking as a male Painted Bunting. How can so many vivid colors be present all at once in such a tiny, modest little bird? They seem (as All About Birds puts it) “to have flown straight out of a child’s coloring book.”

Painted Buntings can be found across the southern U.S., Mexico, Central America, and parts of the Caribbean. Luckily for us, they like to winter in Florida!

This fellow was seen in the early morning, foraging happily for seeds and insects on the grounds of Circle B Bar Ranch Reserve, a wonderful preserve between Orlando and Tampa.

  1. I travelled to the US (Texas) for birding this April and was lucky enough to see a pair of these painted buntings. It was very high in my desirable birds and to see it was taking birding to another level, the bird, the colours and the riot.
