The Limpkins were enjoying a lovely morning at this preserve. . . . As I wrote in a recent post, the Apple Snails they love to eat are plentiful here this year.
This young fellow had a little trouble negotiating his large find. But he eventually found a solid marshy clump to bang the shell on, and was finally able to extract the yummy mollusk inside. 🐌
Wonderful photos!

Very nice ! We don’t have Limpkins in South Carolina, so I have only ever shot a few. Love them

I noticed that the Limpkins’ range only goes as far as northern Florida. They can be very noisy if they’re in your backyard here (!) but I love watching them in the marshes.

Interesting bird BJ, we don’t have them here but We have Whimbrel which looks similar.

Interestingly, AB, “the Limpkin is the only member of its taxonomic family”, according to All About Birds at Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It has a very small range, and lives near fresh water marshes.

Yes, the Limpkins are very handsome, and they were having a field day in this marsh – filled with snails!
