This Great Egret was one of about a dozen foraging in the shallow marsh on this particular morning. Such a joy to see so many of these beauties together!

In no time at all, this Egret met with success and plucked a plump fish out of the water.

Then the negotiations began. It can be very tricky to manipulate a slippery fish in one’s bill and manage to swallow it without dropping it!
Alas. . . . the Egret eventually lost his grip and the fish got away! 😣

But not for long . . . ! In no time, another nearby Egret swooped in, scooped the fish out of the water, and took off with it.

It didn’t take too long for the bandit Egret to maneuver the fish into just right position and slide it neatly into his mouth.

Gulp . . . . down the hatch.
Beautiful presentation!👍

That must have been exciting to watch and your photos are wonderful. At least one of the egrets ended up with a full tummy. 😊

There must’ve been a lot of fish in that particular pond that morning. I didn’t even include a pic showing just how many egrets and other wading birds were all milling around there feeding!

It boggles the mind to try to imagine how much every living being on earth consumes every single day.

Amazing the size of the food they can fit down their gullets!

So true, de Wets. From time to time, I see a large wading bird who struggles unsuccessfully for a very long time with a very large fish, and finally gives up.

The great egrets truly are white beauties, Anita! And they become more and more beautiful as they transition into breeding plumage.

Excellent series of photos, BJ. And egrets sure are tenacious when it comes to fishing for their meals.

Nice series of great images!
One egret’s loss is another’s gain. I empathize with catching a fish only to immediately lose it. Been there done that – many times!
Plenty more where that one came from. The egret will try again.
