This is the time of year that the Fireflag plants are in full bloom. And no one enjoys those luscious purple blossoms more than the iridescent Purple Gallinules!

I love to watch them balancing along the narrow Fireflag stems, as if on a tightrope . . . just to get at those yummy flowers.

stupendously striking colors!

Wonderful photos, thank you for sharing. We recently had a Common Gallinule show up on a pond, which is really out of the way. I keep hoping that a Purple Gallinule might follow suit someday and surprise the local birding community.

You have captured the birds colors beautifully in the spring sunlight BJ, they have gorgeous hues of blue. They are similar to our Australasian Swamphen.

Thank you! They look particularly brilliant in the sun! We also see many Purple Swamphens, sometimes called gray-headed Swamphens here, but they are non-natives.

If those colors were on a human most would consider it “gaudy”. For the Purple Gallinule, it works perfectly.
Great series showing the versatile bird at the salad bar.
