This juvenile Purple Gallinule was so delightful, I just had to show off his lovely face!A few clues to tell us that this is a Juvenile Purple Gallinule . . .
- His plumage has begun to show the wonderful blues and greens that will become shimmering, iridescent colors in the sunlight when he reaches adulthood.
- There is a hint of a grayish-blue above his bill, which will evolve into the very distinctive pale blue ‘shield’, above a bill that will become bright red with a bright yellow tip.
- He is practicing climbing up and down the marshy reeds, and leaping from one narrow stalk to the next, to get at the tasty blossoms dangling overhead, just as his older siblings and parents do.
Wonderful shot! I love these birds – and we DID get to see them in the Everglades!!
I’m so glad you got to see them in the Everglades!! They really are special.

Me too, Pam. Such a precious face. Thank you!

Great shot BJ, thanks for info on a bird similar to our swamphen.
I always appreciate your visits and thoughtful comments, AB.
Beautifully sharp portrait.
This bird was in great lighting and so close by, that I was fortunate to get several shots of him. Thanks for your kind words.
It was wonderful to cavort with the juvenile purple gallinule here, BJ — and your photo is terrific, I like the serenity.
I also like the expression on his face, Jet. And, of course, his features are just beautiful. What a gift to be able to see him so close.
Gorgeous close-up! Great capture Carol! 🙂
