The amazing little Blackpoll Warbler

I can sometimes identify a new bird using one of the many handy online sources that are so available these days. But this one was tricky. So, based on the recommendations of some birding friends, I posted this photo on both the Facebook page for the Sanctuary where we found it, and on the ABA’s What’s this bird? Facebook site.P1020807 Within just a few minutes, people informed me that it was a male Blackpoll Warbler. I just love the sharing and camaraderie among birders~!

I also discovered that the tiny little Blackpoll Warbler, who weighs less than 1/2 an ounce, “makes the longest overwater journey of any songbird—nearly 1,800 miles nonstop over the Atlantic Ocean to its wintering grounds.” (All About Birds). AMAZING!

  1. What a joy to find a blackpoll warbler, BJ. That’s a bird I have never seen, lucky you. Enjoyed the link too, incredible migration feat they perform.
