And so melodious! The Red-winged Blackbirds are increasing in numbers and activity every day here in our wetland marshes. I love listening to their morning songs…. And all their other wonderful songs and calls – check them out here: All About Birds.

What a great photo! Look at the red edging on his black feathers. I’ve never seen that before. Very good.

Thanks so much for noticing the detail, Amy! I, too, was struck by how that showed up in the photo, even though I have seen it before.

Handsome fella! Our Red-wings aren’t quite ready yet for breeding around our marshlands, we still have them in large flocks, attacking our dead cornfields, co-habitating wonderfully together. Soon, though, real soon, we will start to have territory claims in our marshes and no more friends with each other, lol.

Lol, so true, Donna. It’s amazing how territorial they can be once it comes time to stake their claim!

How lovely to see this dazzling portrait of this red-winged blackbird, BJ. You captured his colors, his sleek shape and even the light reflecting off his feathers. And I melt when I hear them sing….

How pretty he is! I can almost hear him singing!
They haven’t started showing up here yet, but I’m listening and looking for them. I have seen Starlings so they won’t be far behind.

I’ve noticed that they seem to be most active in the morning, and even by mid morning, they’re much harder to notice. It will be a while before we see nests, I’m sure.

They are – and under appreciated I think.

I think so too. Some people may think of them as just ordinary, and others just think of the RWBB’s aggressive territorial behavior!

You captured him so well. Only this morning I enjoyed hearing his relatives perform a morning concert.
