Views from the boardwalk

I recently spent an overcast morning at Orlando Wetlands, one of my favorite birding spots . . . Despite the clouds, it was still as lovely as ever~!

A new half-mile long curving boardwalk was completed last winter, taking visitors across one of the lakes and providing previously inaccessible views of the marsh and cypress woods.

As I entered the boardwalk, many happy ducks and wading birds were enjoying the lush vegetation.

As the boardwalk progressed, I could peer into the deep cypress forests.

To get a closer look and learn more about the new boardwalk, and the history and function of these Wetlands, check out the following: Orlando Wetlands Boardwalk.

There are two exits from the boardwalk, each leading to the extensive network of other trails that Orlando wetlands has to offer. A very special place!

  2. How fun for you to have a new boardwalk, BJ, and these incredible sights. Great to see the whistling ducks, ibis and all the waders. And an absolute delight to see the pond cypress forest–I find it so incredible that this species grows so tall when its roots are anchored under water.

    • Thanks so much for your enthusiastic comments, Jet. Have you ever visited Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, not far from Naples, FL? The cypress trees there are mind-boggling. So huge and so tall – many are 500-600 years old!

      • Yes, I had the very fortunate experience of visiting Corkscrew Swamp, BJ. What a wonderful swampy delight. I saw many birds there and had the delight of seeing a pair of painted buntings at their feeder, too. A wonderful place. It was pouring rain the whole time we were there, but this did not matter, we enjoyed it thoroughly. Cheers to you.
