Actually, according to Bird Fact and others, there are several collective nouns for a group of White Pelicans, including “a squadron, pod, pouch or scoop of pelicans” (and ‘parade’ is not one of them π).

I was fortunate to witness MANY groups of White Pelicans last week at Merritt Island NWR!βThey are so fun to watch, whether they’re coming or going, floating or dunking!β

“American white pelicans are one of the largest birds in North America with wingspans up to 9.5 feet across” (University of Florida IFAS Blog)!!

Right about this time of year, in late January, it seems I can always count on seeing White Pelicans at Merritt Island, and they’re often in good company with their friends the Roseate Spoonbills!

These giant white ‘snowbirds’ breed far up north in the western US and Canada, but migrate south and pass through Florida in the winter on their migration route to Central America.
π On Merritt Island’s stage, a grand display, π¦’ A parade of White Pelicans, in the sun’s array. βοΈ Collective nouns, a curious tale, π A squadron, pod, pouch, or scoop sets sail. π’
Bird Fact whispers, and others decree, 𦩠Not a parade, but a spectacle to see. π Witnessing many, last week’s delight, π Pelicans in groups, in morning light.
Coming or going, their feathers gleam, ποΈ Floating or dunking, a majestic dream. π Wingspans broad, up to 9.5 feet, π In the Florida sky, a soaring feat.
Snowbirds they are, in winter’s embrace, βοΈ Breed up north, a distant place. ποΈ Yet in late January, like a familiar rhyme, ποΈ White Pelicans gather, a seasonal chime.
Friends with Spoonbills, a colorful pair, πΊ Sharing the skies, a bond in the air. π Migration south, through the Florida gate, π΄ To Central America, their wintering fate.

Isnβt this just the best time to go to Merritt Island, Wally? Itβs been fantastic every time weβve gone right around the last weekend in January.

Great photographs – I think that first one should be a ‘queue of white pelicans’! (I’m just wondering what it is that they’re queueing for… π )

Good idea, Ann! They really did look like they were lined up for something, but I donβt know what π.

Pelicans are very intelligent BJ. I have watched our Aussie ones work together in a similar fashion to heard fish to the shore. I think I mentioned it in one of my books. Lovely captures my friend π

Thanks, AB. Iβve seen white pelicans here working together in a circle to herd the fish into the center so everyone can partake. These birds appear to be in a line. My husband pointed out that maybe the fish are so plentiful at Merritt Island, they donβt need to work as hard. π

Fun captures, Carol! Glad you got to see so many Pelicans at Merritt Island, and with Spoonbills!!! I don’t recall ever seeing them together like that.

Considering how much pelicans remind me of the flying boats of old I think squadron is an excellent collective noun for a group of them, but then again those white uniforms certainly are reminiscent of sailors on parade!

I never tire watching pelicans move in unison. I would love to see some in company of Roseate Spoonbills, but that won’t happen in this part of the country.

Merritt Island, on the coast of Florida is quite the special place at this time of year. A few people have told me that they even β oddly enough β have seen a couple of flamingos mixed in!! (canβt vouch for that as Iβve never seen flamingos this north, but you never know. π¦©)

With or without flamingos, I would be in bird heaven. π
