Handsome Wood Duck Pair

We are fortunate to have Wood Ducks like this handsome pair appearing in our wetlands regularly in recent years.

These cavity nesters enjoy our freshwater marsh and have nested there in a hollow, dead palm tree overhanging the pond. But you have to be there at just the right moment if you hope to watch the baby ducklings leap into the water from their safe haven!

Although they are not considered endangered, Wood ducks still face threats in the wild, including wetland loss, habitat loss, and deforestation.” (National Wildlife Federation)

Alas … nothing new for many of our beloved Florida birds.☀️

  1. A Wood Duck pair, so handsome, so grand, In wetlands they waddle, on marshy land. 🌿🦆 Papa inspects their new cozy digs, In a palm tree hollow, where the water swigs. 🏞️🍃

Mama stands watch, ever vigilant and true, In her nurturing role, with a sky so blue. 🌞👩‍🦳 Together they nest, a family divine, In a world where the freshwater will always shine. 💧

But alas, dear birds, the threats are real, With habitat loss, it’s a raw deal. 🌲🚫 Yet still they persist, with feathers so bright, In the face of the wild, they continue their flight. ✨🕊️

Let’s cherish these ducks, and all that they do, For nature’s beauty is something so true. 🌿🦆 Though the future is tough, with challenges abound, In the hearts of the marsh, their songs resound. 🎶🌾

  2. I always find wood ducks a contradiction — a stunning contradiction — but a contradiction nonetheless. They are ducks, with all the attendant problems walking on land, and yet they nest in trees. I think it would be awkward for them to get into the nest cavity, but they manage it!
