One overcast morning, the Brown Pelican appeared to be the largest of all the birds wading at the Refuge.
But when he approached the VERY large White Pelican, the big guy called out to his friends, “Hey guys. . . . This little fellow says he’s a Pelican, too!” 😀
“Hmmmm. . . . . Let’s go check this out.”
A second White Pelican arrived to assist in the inspection.
As the deliberations continued, the young Brown Pelican just sauntered off, happy to be a different kind of Pelican ;-).
What a fun series! Great shots of the White Pelicans.

Thanks, Ellen. The White Pelicans are really majestic – with a wingspan of up to 8-9 feet! Very photogenic, too.

Thanks, Belinda! I realized later that I included no information about the two species of pelicans in this post. Hope to add more substance in another upcoming white pelican post. 🙂

Very comical and cute. So, birds of a feather don’t always flock together!

Good one, Berny! Actually, the two kinds of Pelicans have very different foraging and feeding behaviors, too. It’s always a treat to see them near one another.

These guys are really cute to watch! And it seemed like this scenario was actually being played out in their interactions 🙂

Neat story. Are both species usually found in that area?

Good question, Sue! The brown pelicans are here year-round, but the white pelicans are a real treat! They come through Florida while migrating to Central and South America during the winter months.

Lovely little bird story BJ😊 It did look like they were quite curious of the darker relative.

Yes, AB, I honestly think their behavior showed curiosity, if I dare say so about pelicans!

Happy New Year to you too HJ! It is always fun to see the Brown Pelicans and the White Pelicans interact… we are so lucky to have the White Pelicans stop by and visit Florida over the winter.
