One overcast morning, the Brown Pelican appeared to be the largest of all the birds wading at the Refuge.
But when he approached the VERY large White Pelican, the big guy called out to his friends, “Hey guys. . . . This little fellow says he’s a Pelican, too!” ๐
“Hmmmm. . . . . Let’s go check this out.”
A second White Pelican arrived to assist in the inspection.
As the deliberations continued, the young Brown Pelican just sauntered off, happy to be a different kind of Pelican ;-).
What a fun series! Great shots of the White Pelicans.
Thanks, Ellen. The White Pelicans are really majestic – with a wingspan of up to 8-9 feet! Very photogenic, too.
Beautifully sharp photos in wonderful light! Great tale too.
Thanks, Belinda! I realized later that I included no information about the two species of pelicans in this post. Hope to add more substance in another upcoming white pelican post. ๐
Enjoyed your pelican story. Wishing you a healthy and happy 2018.
Thank you! Wishing you a healthy, productive and joyous new year as well. ๐
Very comical and cute. So, birds of a feather donโt always flock together!

Good one, Berny! Actually, the two kinds of Pelicans have very different foraging and feeding behaviors, too. It’s always a treat to see them near one another.
Hehe, such a cute post!
These guys are really cute to watch! And it seemed like this scenario was actually being played out in their interactions ๐
Neat story. Are both species usually found in that area?
Good question, Sue! The brown pelicans are here year-round, but the white pelicans are a real treat! They come through Florida while migrating to Central and South America during the winter months.
Thanks for taking us on this adventure to the refuge, BJ. I like seeing the size differences of the pelicans, a bird I never tire of watching. Best wishes for a happy new year!
Hope all is well with you, Jet! I’ve been away from WordPress again and really need to catch up on news from my fellow bloggers. Wishing you a safe and tranquil new year filled with all good things!
Lovely little bird story BJ๐ It did look like they were quite curious of the darker relative.
Yes, AB, I honestly think their behavior showed curiosity, if I dare say so about pelicans!
Excellent captures Carol! I wish I was there to see these guys together. Happy New Year! to you and your family. ๐
Happy New Year to you too HJ! It is always fun to see the Brown Pelicans and the White Pelicans interact… we are so lucky to have the White Pelicans stop by and visit Florida over the winter.
Great story!!
Thanks! It was a great morning โ๏ธ
