A few weeks ago I spotted this beautiful Wilson’s Snipe above. Despite being out in the open, he could be easily overlooked as his plumage blended in with the dry brown marsh grass.

Yesterday I discovered another Wilson’s Snipe making his way through the shallow water at a different preserve, equally well camouflaged among the green marsh plants.
There’s something irresistible about these shy, plump little birds – I’m so glad they enjoy wintering here in South Florida with us!
Great sighting, BJ! It’s always a treat to see these guys.

And I can’t resist, pointing them out to people who are walking by and might miss them!

🌾 In the open expanse, where marsh grass weaves, 🌿 A Wilson’s Snipe, a master who deceives. 🦩 With plumage of browns, in the marsh’s embrace, 🍂 Hiding in plain sight, a marvel of grace.
A few weeks past, one caught my sight, 👀 A beauty, a snipe, bathed in sunlight. ☀️ Amidst dry grass, a camouflage so sly, 🍁 A hidden gem, beneath the sky.
Yesterday’s tale, a new discovery unfolds, 🌊 Another snipe, where green marsh molds. 🌱 In shallow waters, a dance so grand, 💃 Equally concealed, in the wetland.
Shy and plump, their charm so bright, 😊 Irresistible beings, in the soft daylight. 🌅 Wintering companions in South’s gentle air, 🌴 Wilson’s Snipes, a sight so rare.
🌾🌿🦩🍂👀☀️🍁🌊🌱💃😊🌅🌴

Thank you so much, Ted. I don’t know who is more invisible in the marsh… The Wilson’s Snipes or the American Bitterns ☺️

What a beautiful capture BJ They are amazing at camouflage. We have not seen our first Snipe yet, they are so timid 😊

So true, AB, which is one of the reasons I’m so happy that they enjoy sitting so close to our boardwalks!

Beautiful photos. It’s always a treat to see (and photograph) the snipes early enough to avoid flushing them by getting too close.

Thank you, Tanja. I think these two were so content that they most likely couldn’t be convinced to move.😉

The feathers have beautiful, and evidently very effective, markings – lovely photographs!

Thank you, Ann. Amazingly, I was walking at one of these spots just today, and saw at least 7 or 8 more snipes tucked away in the marsh grass!
