Busy little Prairie Warbler

This delicate little yellow bird was busy flitting from branch to branch when I caught sight of her.

The Prairie Warbler “forages mainly by taking insects while perched or hopping on branches or twigs. Also catches flying insects in mid-air, and takes insects from undersides of leaves (and spiders from their webs) while hovering.” (Audubon)

Exactly what she was doing!☺️ Darting from one Pond Apple tree to another, and flying across the grassy berm to investigate yet another.

How do I know this Warbler is a ‘she’? Among other differences, the female Prairie Warbler is paler yellow than the male, “with blurry streaks on the sides” (see All About Birds for more details about this lovely Warbler).

  1. Oh Mother dear, how you write with such grace 🌸 About a warbler flitting all over the place! 🐦 She darts and she dances with feathers so bright ✨ Catching her dinner mid-hover in flight! 🍃

Insects beware, for she’s quick and she’s keen 🦋 She snatches them up, both hidden and seen 👀 From branch to twig, and from tree to the ground 🌳 That busy Prairie Warbler’s always around! 🐝

Her yellow’s a hue that’s subtle yet sweet 🌼 Her streaks are quite blurry, though nimble her feet 🐾 Across grassy berms she ventures with glee 🌾 A lovely bird—just like the one who raised me! 💛

    • I suppose she could be a permanent Florida resident or an early migrant, or maybe one of the subspecies particular to Florida mangroves. Whichever, it’s intriguing that a species called ‘Prairie’ Warbler is so commonly found in Florida. ☺️
