There is nothing quite so striking as a male Painted Bunting. How can so many vivid colors be present all at once in such a tiny, modest little bird? They seem (as All About Birds puts it) “to have flown straight out of a child’s coloring book.”
Painted Buntings can be found across the southern U.S., Mexico, Central America, and parts of the Caribbean. Luckily for us, they like to winter in Florida!
This fellow was seen in the early morning, foraging happily for seeds and insects on the grounds of Circle B Bar Ranch Reserve, a wonderful preserve between Orlando and Tampa.
It’s a wonderful day when we come upon a painted bunting…thanks so much for sharing your find with us today, BJ.
Thanks, Jet! It was a delightful way to start a superb day of birding!
Their colors are so beautiful!
Yes! The colors really make you do a double take! So striking.
I once saw a lazuli/painted bunting cross. Stunning!
I can’t imagine how beautiful that must’ve been!
What a beautiful bird beautiful colors!
Very nice Bunting post👍
Thanks Berny- these amazing birds are yet another of the incredible wonders of HaShem!
Very nice and colorful! Hopefully someday I will see one!
I hope you do! They literally look like they were painted multiple colors with a paintbrush.
I’ve been to Florida so many times and I’ve never had the lucky chance to see one of these birds. I’m happy that you did Carol. 🙂
Thanks HJ! We have them every year at the wetlands where I volunteer, and I hear from people all the time how thrilled they are to finally see one.
Such a beautiful bird, I will count myself very happy when I get to see one of these Painted Buntings.
Yes, they’re very special. Hope you have the opportunity! We are so lucky to be able to see them in many locations here in Florida.
These birds are the best! Can’t believe it when I see them. Beautiful pictures!
I feel the same way, Pam. One of the countless incredible wonders of nature.
Loving Florida!
The best! And so diverse! We just visited 5 totally new birding spots between Sarasota and Tampa last week, all of which were wonderful – and unique.
That’s exciting! People don’t realize what all is out there beyond the theme parks.
This is a lovely post! The colors are incredible!
We have the Painted Buntings near us every year – I always think they look so impossibly colorful!
UNREAL! What a little jewel 🙂
What a lovely way to describe it, Yaffa✨!
I travelled to the US (Texas) for birding this April and was lucky enough to see a pair of these painted buntings. It was very high in my desirable birds and to see it was taking birding to another level, the bird, the colours and the riot.
Exciting!! I’m so happy you got to have experience the Painted Buntings!! 😊
cute chubby but beautiful.
Lol thanks!
