fascinating! are you saying that their faces appear in different colors depending on the time of year? is it only the males or also who change color? why green, and not some other color? hmmm.
Yes! Itβs quite remarkable, Yishai, how birds will develop these brilliant colors during mating season. Both the male and the female develop the green facial color and the long wispy feathers. βWhy green?β is a great question β wish I knew the answer to that one!
I love that color, and have always loved the beautiful frilly look of their breeding plumage. I don’t think I’ve ever been fortunate enough to see that up here, though I guarantee I’ll keep a closer eye on them just in case. π Thanks much for sharing!
You’re welcome, Todd, and thank YOU for your visit and comments! Since these are their breeding colors and plumage, it’s probably not typically seen much throughout their range in more northern, central and western states. But. . . you never know, things are certainly changing these days!
Einstein wrote: βOf what is significant in one’s own existence one is hardly aware, and it certainly should not bother the other fellow. What does a fish know about the water in which he swims all his life?β I bring that up because even as native speakers of English we take it for granted and are unaware of many things. A foreigner learning English often notices things that we don’t.
Beautiful! π Spring is arriving, and so is breeding colors & plumage, it’s exciting!!

Mine, too! I can never quite get over the fact that this brilliant green is actually the color they acquire during mating season.
