Mid-August to mid-September hasn’t been much of a birding month for me this year. It’s been – and still is – very HOT 🥵 here in Southeast Florida, and the birds don’t seem to like it any more than the humans.

But the Double-crested Cormorants are always out and about, no matter what the weather.
All About Birds offers this rather comical description of the Double-crested Cormorant: “Though they look like a combination of a goose and a loon, they are relatives of frigatebirds and boobies. . . “ Year-round residents in our area, the Cormorants are so accustomed to visitors strolling along the boardwalks that they appear to be posing, hoping for a selfie with the next passerby 😉.
I just love their jewel like eyes.
It’s very much Autumn here already. Brrr!

Me too, Deborah.✨
We’re just starting to have a bit lower humidity and more pleasant temperatures in the early morning and before sunset. ☀️

The cormorants are so common that I think they don’t always get credit for their beauty. ☺️

They don’t! Happy to see you gave it to them!

Thank you, Ann! Though, I must say this Double-crested Cormorant, even with his sparkling blue eye, doesn’t compare with the magnificent shades of your fall flowers!!

Hehe, imagine what they would be like together! 🙂

I completely agree, AB, and I fear they’re too often overlooked. 😌

I love cormorants although a lot of people hate them for being greedy fisherman (who is greedy but humankind, right?) they have such great blue/green eyes

Yes, I love their gem-like eyes! Alas, I agree with you about humankind. 😔

🌞🌴 In Southeast Florida’s scorching embrace, 🥵 A quiet birding month, at a slower pace. 🦜 But in this heat, a regular’s in flight, 🏞️ The Double-crested Cormorants, a true bird’s delight.
With a look that’s curious, a mix quite rare, 🤪 A goose, a loon, but kin of the air. 🦆 Frigatebirds and boobies in their ancestry’s stream, 🏝️ Year-round residents, a birder’s dream. 🐦
As you stroll on boardwalks, they make their debut, 🚶 No matter the weather, a consistent crew. ☀️ With visitors passing, they strike a fun pose, 😄 Hoping for selfies as the excitement flows. 📸
So if you seek birds in Southeast’s blazing sun, 🌞 The Cormorants are there, each and every one. 🌅 A comical mix, a sight to enjoy, 🤣 In Florida’s nature, they’re no decoy! 🌴🦜🏞️🤪🦆🏝️🐦🚶☀️😄📸🌞🌅🤣🌴

Are the eyes always so turquoise?

Yes, turquoise is their natural color, but they become even more brilliant during breeding season! Even the inside of their mouth turns blue when in breeding colors.

A turquoise inner mouth: imagine if people had that, too.

It’s actually a slightly different shade of blue, but quite remarkable to see.
